Your wedding day is arguably the best day of your life. From the moment you get engaged, Pinterest boards become your best friends (so many wedding hairstyles to choose from!), your evening reading material becomes every bridal mag you can find and every weekend starts to get booked up with viewings, tastings, fittings and the rest.

 Queen of all things wedding related, Martha Stewart, has seen it all and knows a thing or two about the perfect way to wed. That’s why we were surprised when the event expert revealed the wedding trend she would like to see the back of…

‘The three-year engagement I think is becoming passé. I personally hate anything longer than six months engagements.” Martha told guests at the Martha Stewart Wedding Party, “Once engaged, speed it up.’

While a lot of brides-to-be enjoy a long engagement, giving them plenty of time to plan and save for their special day, Martha believes girls these days are luckier than past generations. ‘Millennial brides have it easier. They all have money and are employed — or most of them, and they’re smart. So they are planning the unusual, the different, and the exciting kinds of weddings.’

But with the average wedding in the UK costing just over £30,000, it’s not as easy as booking it all in one go. On average, a bride’s dress alone is going to set you back £1,378 (according to Bride’s Magazine), and the venue can be expected to total over £6k too. So unless you’ve got a cool thirty grand going spare, we think it’s safe to say we’re only going to see an increase in long engagements.

 While we appreciate that you think we’re all money saving experts, the de rigueur of the previous generation was to get wed at the weekend, but sadly for us, astronomical increases in weekend wedding prices are forcing us ‘smart millennials’ to marry mid-week. So while we’d all love a 6-month engagement. Unfortunately, the 3-year trend is more of a necessity.

It’s time to stock up

Strobing, contouring, highlighting, glitter liner… Beauty trends truly are the gift that keeps on giving. So what’s forecast to be the biggest beauty trend this year, we hear you ask?

According to a new report from the guys at Google, masking is already the most searched beauty trend of 2017.

When you think about it, it’s really no surprise: from the best sheet masks, homemade face masks and even the best hair masks, there’s no doubt that masking has dominated the world of beauty for the last couple of years.

There’s no reason to find your favourite face mask and stick to it. Multi-masking, the art of applying different masks to your face depending on its differing skin concerns, is a particularly popular masking method that gained huge popularity in 2016. It allows you to treat the different areas of your face, for example, an oily forehead needs different treatment to a dry A-zone.

So if you want supermodel skin, the answer is in your packet or pot of face mask.

Five ways the effects of stress are damaging your hair

And how to spot the signs before the damage is done

We’re pretty well-versed in the many ways that stress can damage our health and well being. But we bet you didn’t know the negative impact stress is having on your hair health, too.

Fortunately Sam Burnett, Creative Director and Owner of award-winning hair salon Hare & Bone, is on hand to clue you in. He’s shared five of the biggest ways stress can impact your hair health, as well as what you can do to remedy it…

Lack of sleep

We know that sleep deprivation is really bad for our overall health (it actually has the same effects as being drunk), but it’s also affecting your hair in a big way. ‘A lack of sleep and restless nights can cause hair and scalp issues’ Sam explains. ‘Your body needs enough time throughout the night to refresh and repair. Sleep should be seen as the most vital ingredient in the replenishment stage of skin renewal.’


Under pressure, we know our immune systems take a bit of a hit.’When the body is under stress, for example when you’re ill, nutrients that your hair requires are often redirected to other areas of the body. As a result of this, people can experience thinning hair, alopecia and dry or tight scalps.’


It’s no joke that there’s a link between stress and grey hair. ‘Trauma and shock from stressful events have a huge impact on hair and scalp health’, says Sam. Due to the stressful lifestyles and the fast-paced nature of the modern world, we are seeing an increase in prematurely greying hair among young people.’

Being overworked

Although your stressful job could make you live longer, it’s not doing much good for your hair health. According to Sam, ‘feeling overworked and run down can cause the hair to lose its shine and healthy condition. Normally this is caused by a poor diet and a general neglect of your overall health.’


‘A common symptom of stress is repetitive pulling and scratching the scalp – this can be from anxiety or boredom, resulting in permanent damage to the follicle and, in extreme cases, premature hair loss.’

So, what can we do about it?

Fortunately it’s not all doom and gloom, as you can catch the signs of stress on your physical appearance well before they get to your hair. ‘Keep an eye on your skin and nails,’ advises Sam. ‘These are the first areas that will show the signs of stress before you see it in your hair and scalp. Look out for skin conditions such as psoriasis and dermatitis, as well as brittle or thin nails.’

As peak bikini time seems to be an all-year thing now (hello winter sun holidays!), getting poolside ready is unfortunately no longer restricted to the run up to summer.

If high intensity workouts aren’t for you, don’t panic – there are other ways to obtain a flat stomach.

We have put together the best gut-friendly foods to introduce into your diet. The result? More energy and a flat stomach. Here are the foods to eat to help you get a flatter stomach, and more energy (and you don’t have to cut out the bread…)

Which foods should I eat to get a flat stomach?

Green vegetables

‘Eating plenty of greens will help by keeping your bowels moving. Try low sugar veggies like broccoli, green beans and kale,’ says nutritionist Lorna Driver-Davies from NutriCentre.

Wholemeal bread

‘Avoid quick release carbs, which will raise your blood sugar quickly then make it plummet again. This happens because your body releases adrenaline and cortisol to stabilise things, which both contribute to fat around your middle. Swap to wholegrain alternatives that release energy slowly,’ says nutritionist Dr. Marilyn Glenville.

Healthy Fats

Ensuring a healthy amount of ‘good fats’ in your diet is known to be one of the best bloating natural remedies. ‘Getting enough “good oils” in your diet is key for reducing bloating, as they help keep your bowels moving by lubricating your stools. Aim for loads of Omega 3, avocado, flax oil, olive oil and nuts,’ says Lorna Driver-Davies.


‘This good quality protein slows down the rate that the stomach processes food and delays the passage of the carbohydrates through it. As soon as you add a protein (be it animal or vegetable) to a carbohydrate, you change it into a slower releasing carbohydrate, that will keep your sugar levels steady and energy up,’ says Dr Marilyn Glenville.


‘If you do only one thing, cut down on your sugar intake, as this prevents bad bacteria from over-growing in your gut. Instead add cinnamon to your latte or porridge. It’s great for digestion, anti-fungal – and will keep your sugar cravings at bay,’ says Lorna Driver-Davies.


‘Research has shown that leucine, one of the essential amino acids found in eggs, can help with weight loss by stabilising blood sugar levels and encouraging the body to shed fat,’ says Dr Marilyn Glenville.


‘Celery helps flatten your stomach because it’s an excellent diuretic as a result of its high potassium content, which makes it great for limiting water retention,’ says Lorna Driver-Davies.


‘Eating probiotic-rich foods is essential to help flatten your stomach by keeping your good bacteria levels up to maximum, thus banishing bloating. You should try live yoghurts and fermented foods, including sauerkraut, kefir, kimchi and miso,’ says Lorna Driver-Davies.


‘Certain herbs, such as peppermint and ginger, genuinely aid the digestive system. This is important because if your body isn’t digesting food properly, your whole system can get out of balance, contributing to bloating,’ says Lorna Driver-Davies.


Asparagus isn’t just a great low-calorie, high-nutrient food. It’s also perfect for maintaining a flat tummy as it helps to regulate the good bacteria in your gut, preventing you from getting bloated.


Fennel has been used to treat gastrointestinal issues in Chinese, Indian, Egyptian and Greek medicine for centuries. The tiny seeds are great for stimulating digestion and their anti-inflammatory properties help to relax contracted intestinal muscles keeping your tummy looking flat.

A breakfast with lots of oats in, such as porridge or oatmeal, is a great way of setting you up for the day because they contain a healthy dose of protein, calories and fat. It will give you energy and keep you full, without making you feel bloated.


Aside from being packed with vitamin C, lemons are a great way to battle fluid retention which can leave you feeling swollen. Try adding a slice of lemon to hot water in the morning for an easy way to get more of the fruit into your diet.

UV gel nail lamps might actually be a huge health risk

Are gel manicures doing more harm than good for our nails?

What’s the first thing you do when you hit the beach? Apply your best sun cream, right? After all, we’re all aware of the damage UV rays can do to our skin. And we’re all aware that in order to protect our skin from the sun, we need to slap on some sun cream before heading out into it. But, we doubt that sun cream is the first thing you think of when you hit the nail salon. Thing is, you should. Because UV gel nail lamps can be a major health risk.

You see, if your gel manicure is cured with a UV lamp, each coat of gel nail polish is set using UV light. And according to Dr Chris Adigun, from New York University School of Medicine, this can damage the skin much the same way as lying in a sun bed.

There is also the added worry that because these lights aren’t regulated, consumers don’t know how much exposure they’re getting each time. And although these rays don’t burn the skin like UVB rays, she says, they do penetrate the skin and can damage DNA and collagen. In turn, this can lead to premature ageing and may increase skin cancer risk.

In fact, in 2009, a study revealed that two women developed tumours on their hands following exposure to UV gel nail lamps.  Neither of them had a family history of skin cancer and both of them worked indoors, according to the research published in JAMA Dermatology. This led Dr Adigun to study the side effects of UV lamps.

Another unwelcome side effect she found? Photo-ageing of the skin, which can show up as things like sun spots and wrinkles. What’s more, people with weak or brittle nails may not be able to withstand the acetone used during the removal process and by continuing with it, may cause serious damage to their nail bed.

Thankfully, these days, most nail technicians use LED lights that are no more dangerous than sitting under strip lighting. But, if you’re concerned about UV exposure or the health of your nails, talk to a board-certified dermatologist.

This is the secret to making your fake tan flawless

Goodbye patchy knees and streaky arms!

Which fake tan tips actually work? How do you avoid those streaks and patches? And what can we do if we have a Ross Gellar style disaster and need to get it all of asap?
When it comes to getting a glow from the bottle, it’s not always an easy feet. Buying the best fake tan just isn’t enough – you need to prepare your skin, use the right tools and consider what you’re going to wear afterwards.
Needless to say, getting started can feel like a job in itself which is why we’ve put together the best fake tan tips to ensure that you’ve got a gorgeous natural glow without a streaky shin in sight.
And if you’ve avoiding hitting the bottle thus far because you’re worried about which shades to choose, we’ve got tanning pro James Harknett on board to help us out.
‘Gradual build up tans are a great way to start as they contain far less tanning agent than a mousse or lotion. A red-based tan is ideal for fair skin tones who don’t tan well and, if your skin freckles in the sun, a red base will complement you,’ he advises.
‘Olive skin tones and those who tan well on holiday should choose a green base. Brunettes with dark features will benefits from an olive base colour.’
So now you know how dark to go, get ready to become a pro at faking it fabulously.

Fake Tan Tip 1: Exfoliate

It may sound obvious but trying to regularly keep your skin in good condition will help your cause when it comes to hitting the fake tan bottle. If you really want to avoid a patchy fake tan, you need to gently scrub skin before beforehand to lift all the dead skin cells and reveal revitalised, ready-to-tan skin beneath.
Tanning pro James Harknett says: ‘Wrists, ankles, elbows and knees are prime areas prone to colour grabbing and will easily turn too dark so you should always apply less tan to these areas. And make sure you exfoliate them first to keep the colour even.’
Once you’re over your tan, you can also exfoliate to get your natural skin tone back.

Fake Tan Tip 2: Moisturise

Be sure to slather your body top-to-toe in moisturiser before you fake it, but do remember to let it fully sink in before you begin applying your self tan. Be sure to pay particular attention to wrists, elbows, ankles, knees and feet as these areas can get dry and need extra moisture.
Moisturise every day when you step out the shower because patchy, dry skin just won’t respond well to a faux glow and it’ll make it easier when you come to the bottle bronzing.

Fake Tan Tip 3: Use latex gloves

Orange-tinted palms and grubby-looking fingernails are the tell-tale sign that you’ve been cheating that golden glow. The best way to avoid it is to get into the habit of applying fake tan wearing latex gloves. Yes, it may feel a little strange at first, but after a few applications it will become second nature.

Fake Tan Tip 4: Invest in a back brush

Unless you have a dedicated other half to ensure your back is bronzed, tanning your back solo seems like an impossible mission. Investing in a back spatula or roller will help you to reach those nooks and crannies that are easily missed and difficult to reach, meaning a much more even and realistic tan.

Fake Tan Tip 5: Dab Vaseline on eyebrows and hair line

The last thing you want to do when fake tanning your face is end up with an uneven colour and a horrible tide mark by your hairline and eyebrows. Dotting a small amount of Vaseline along your brows and next to your hair line will help you tan the face with caution, as dabbing the jelly means that any slip of the hand when applying will prevent dodgy marks appearing in these areas. James Harknett says: ‘Many ‘tans in cans’ contain alcohol to help the spray dry faster on the skin so moisturise your face thoroughly first to prevent it dehydrating. Be careful not to hold the can too close; around 20cm from the face is sufficient, and spray downwards.‘If you find self-tan sits in your pores, place a cold damp flannel over the face for a few minutes to help shrink them.’

Fake Tan Tip 6: Buff

When the professionals want to ensure a tan is perfectly applied and avoid any sign of patchiness, they don a buffing mitt and gently dab away at any build up of tan to spread it evenly and avoid varying shades. These are generally cheap to buy and easy to use so get buffing after applying your lotion or spray.

Fake Tan Tip 7: Wear loose, dark clothing afterwards

In an ideal world we would have time to aimlessly wander around post-fake tan, but in reality it’’s a quick slap of lotion before we rush out of the door. The number one rule of dressing after tanning is to wear dark, loose clothing to avoid marking any wardrobe favourites. So be sure to throw on a jersey LBD and keep legs bare to optimise your tan potential.

Fake Tan Tip 8: Polish and reapply

Now your tan has developed and you’’re happy with the results, the work doesn’t stop there! Stay glowing for longer by maintaining a strict routine of gentle exfoliation and lots more moisturising. And if you can feel the flawless fake tan starting to fade, then simply top up.
So there you have it – you’ll be a glow pro in no time.
